The seeds of HardenedLinux were planted in 2010, and by 2014, the fruits of our exploratory journey began to take shape. In 2014, Shawn C [a.k.a “citypw”] took the initiative to launch the HardenedLinux community project, marking the official beginning of their involvement. Recognizing the importance of sustained development and maintenance, Shawn extended their support by providing essential funding. This enabled the project to employ dedicated full-time maintainers, ensuring continuous progress and stability throughout the period spanning from 2015 to 2020.
HardenedLinux now are a collective of free software, firmware, and hardware enthusiasts, hackers, and cybersecurity researchers. From an individual’s perspective, it’d be both tragedy and comedy to live in with this technological world. We’re sacrificing our privacy and the possibility of gaining the knowledge of tech product around us, while enjoying the convenience from it. The situation is less than ideal. However, there is a glimmer of hope. Free/libre and open-source software, firmware, and hardware provide an alternative, offering a path to reclaim our privacy and freedom in the digital realm. This alternative could shield individuals from the collateral damage of network attacks by crackers, leech wars between bigtechs, and cyber wars between nations. If individuals are willing to invest time (overcoming learning curves) and money (purchasing devices), it’s entirely possible to construct a personal “cyber bunker” for self-defense.
Our goal at HardenedLinux is to create the best security practices based on free/libre and open-source projects for those seeking to preserve their digital freedom and privacy. The ethos of our community is encapsulated in the phrase, “Ask not what the Free/libre software/firmware/hardware community can do for you, but what you can do for the community.” Is it not written in Acts 20:35, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.”? Each member of h4rdenedzer0 has their own unique area of expertise, contributing to a diverse and expansive knowledge base. This broad range of talents aids us in developing new toolkits and porting excellent existing ones (like PaX/Grsecurity for Nexus7 2013) to create a comprehensive defense-in-depth solution. We’re guided by the principle of holistic security, integrating it into GNU/Linux-based systems for various scenarios, be it server, mobile, or IoT gateway devices. While we all have day jobs to sustain ourselves, it’s in our night jobs, midnight jobs, and dawn jobs where we strive to make this world a little more secure. We’re dedicated to turning the tide, one secure system at a time.
